AX 2009 Upgrade Analysis

AX 2009 Upgrade Analysis

Hello friends,

This blog helps how to use Upgrade analysis tool (2009 upgrade analysis) in Life cycle services (LCS). Upgrade analysis helps us to plan full-version (Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 from Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0 or Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009), minor-version, and in-place upgrades to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012.

Below chart shows how the service works for both full-version upgrades and in-place upgrades.

Use of Rapid Data Collector Tool:
Upgrade analysis uses a Rapid Data Collector (RDC) tool to analyze information about the existing environment. This information can help us to estimate the scale of the upgrade project.
  • To use Upgrade analysis, we must install the RDC tool, and then upload the RDC files and AOD files.
  • The RDC tool collects metadata about the production environment, such as the number of records in tables.

Important: The RDC tool should be run in a copy of the production environment / run it on an AX 4.0 or AX 2009 client, where no upgrade scripts have been loaded.

Install the RDC tool:
  • Go to LCS, and sign in.
  • Open a project, and then click the Upgrade analysis tile.
  • Click Add (little plus-sign at the bottom of the page. It should be visible for all administrators).
  • On the Upgrade analysis create job page, in the source-to-target upgrade list, click Download.
  • Download the RapidDataCollector.msi file, and then run it on an AX 4.0 or AX 2009 client to install and run the Rapid Data Collector service.
  • Enter a name for the job, identify the version and build of Microsoft Dynamics AX that you’re upgrading from, and then click Create.
    • Name
    • Description
    • Version

Rapid Data Collector:
Install and run the Rapid Data Collector Service on an AX 4.0 or AX 2009. The service creates a zip file that contains RDC files.

Upload and analyze files:
We have to upload the RDC and AOD files to analyze the information and we can upload them in any order.
  • On the Upgrade analysis file upload page, click + (Add files).
  • Select the type of file to upload. I have selected AOD file first.
  • Enter the file location, and then click Upload.
  • Then click on add files and select the second file RDC.
  • Click upload.
  • Then we can see both AOD and RDC files.
  • After we upload all the files, click Analyze. Then we will get a below message. Click OK.
  • When the analysis process is completed, the status appears as Complete.
  • After completing the process, it generates the upgrade analysis report.
  • For information about the reports that are available, see the “Download the report” section.

Upgrade Analysis report:
Upgrade analysis report is a detailed report, which is a Microsoft Excel file that we can download and review.
  • To view the overview report, click View.
  • To download the detailed report, click the Excel icon.
  • The following table describes the Excel worksheets that the detailed report provides.

Trouble shooting Tips:
  • We have to select both RDC and AOD files to do the upgrade analysis otherwise it will throw error as below.
  • When run the Rapid Data Collector we should have proper permissions on database otherwise it will throw “Unable to connect to database” error. In that case we have to check whether SQL port and is running on the standard port 1433 or not. And also check whether we are passing correct values in the below fields or not. Sometimes if “AX Database Server Host” and “AX Database Server Instance Name” are same then also it will throw error in that case we have to “MSSQLSERVER” in “AX Database Server Instance Name” field.
    • AX Database Server Host,
    • AX Database Server Instance Name,
    • AX Database Name.
